Ifttt Upload Tweet Image to Google Drive
Style back when Classics social media began — by which I hateful the Classics-l list, soc.classics on Usenet, and various other online fora — i of the earliest, recurring complaints by some participants circulated effectually the sheer volume of posts/emails one might get in a day. I use it (and will evidence you beneath) to monitor eBay, archive my own tweets, save others' tweets that appeal to me for whatever reasons, and (perhaps nearly important) to impose order on Twitter when a conference is existence livetweeted.
Backstory
IFTTT (IF This Then That) is a simple-to-use online 'triggering' service which I've constitute to be incredibly useful in all my online activities. It enables all sorts of technology to interact with other technology via the spider web (e.thou., you tin set it up so your phone automatically mutes when y'all arrive at work, or church building, or whatever). I first learned of it some v or six years ago from the Lifehacker site and have made dandy use of information technology since. Mayhap oddly, my first utilise of it had null to do with Classics — I was put in charge of our schoolhouse yearbook and was taking piles of photos with my phone. I was getting annoyed with always having to frontwards photos to my email then I could edit them (or whatever) on my laptop and so establish a 'recipe' (as they were then chosen; they're now called applets) at IFTTT which would send whatsoever photo taken automatically to my email. I used it a couple of times but so decided information technology was taking over my hard drive too speedily.

IFTTT and Twitter
Skipping over another experiments, we now turn to my aha moment when I realized IFTTT could be used to impose some gild on Twitter. Initially, I wanted something which would create an annal of all my tweets. When I found out how it worked, I actually was using the results to create pages of tweets hither at rogueclassicism, which some of you might recall (I stopped doing that primarily considering information technology created huge pages of tweets which were really slow to load). I'll mention this one, though, just in instance you would like to annal your ain tweets. Again, the recipe already existed:

Once you have done that, you click on the little fix there (upper correct in the blueish) and include your details. This applet also volition create a spreadsheet in your Google Bulldoze which you should requite an appropriate title to (the default works) and a path to the file on your Drive (I retrieve the default works here too; if you want it somewhere else, it can be changed). I'll admit this i isn't perfect, just it gets the chore done and requires you to 'similar' a tweet. Information technology's also one that I had to create myself (i.eastward. there wasn't an existing applet for this) but it's actually rather easy and I'll walk you through information technology:
Assuming you have set up your IFTTT business relationship and have given the permissions for Twitter and Google Drive …
- Click on the dropdown arrow by your business relationship name and select 'New Applet':
2. You lot'll be taken to a folio that looks like this; we're working on the protasis now … click on the +this part:
3. Select the service that will exist the source of the protasis … in this instance, Twitter (you can besides type 'twitter' into the search box if it isn't conveniently in the top row as it happened to be for me)
4. Select from the various choices the 1 you desire; in this case it relates to the user liking a tweet:
five. Okay … now it's apodosis time … click the +then that:
6. Again, you'll exist selecting a service … what they don't tell you is you accept to specify the Google service rather specifically (sorry), so you're looking for Sheets:
seven. Then again you lot select what you lot want to happen, in this case, add a row to the sheet:
eight. After that, you'll exist taken to a folio which looks similar a bunch of code (sort of). There'south zero really necessary to modify here, but you lot might want to give the spreadsheet a different proper noun. Later, when you're skilful with IFTTT, this is the folio where you'll 'fiddle'.:
9. Click on 'Create Action', then 'stop' on the page that comes upward. Since you're triggering this by liking something, you actually don't need to be sent a notification when information technology happens, and so y'all might want to turn that off.
The Money Shot: Following (and saving) Livetweeted Conferences
Of all the things I've done with Twitter, IFTTT, and Google, this is probably the most useful for the earth of Classics Twitter. A few months ago, in that location were ii or iii conferences going on at the same time that were being livetweeted by several people in several venues. The conferences all had hashtags, of course but even with that, my twitterfeed was bursting with hundreds more tweets than usual. Then, every bit I pulled out the last clumps of my hair trying to stay on peak of things, I thought of IFTTT. In this situation, we demand to employ that page mentioned in pace 8 to a higher place.
The procedure for this one is almost identical to the foregoing.
- Click 'New Applet'
- Click the +then and select Twitter
- This time, click on 'New Tweet from Search':
four. Type in the hashtag for the conference and click 'Create Trigger':
v. Click on the +that, use the searchbox to select Google Sheets, and do the 'Add row' thing, create action, and finish as in the previous example. Again, y'all'll want to plow off notifications.
6. Now hither's where the 'fiddle page' comes into play; after you've washed everything (or go to your main page with your applets), you will see what you created every bit this:
seven. Click on the piddling gear and you lot'll exist taken to the fiddle page. Here's the 1 for the IFTTT recipe I made for the CACSEAC a few months ago. Detect I have manually added 'Exclude:retweets' in the 'Search for' box; I remember it adjusts in the box above, merely if not, y'all can do it manually here too.
UPDATE (a couple days afterwards when I noticed): in the 'Formatted Row' box, delete the entry that says 'Link to first URL' … it won't touch the operation of the thing if you don't, merely it will give you a potentially annoying empty column in your spreadsheet.
eight. Click on save and await for the tweets to pour in. If you're paranoid similar I am, you will practice a test tweet with the hashtag to see if it works. It might accept a few minutes to get started just it should testify upward pretty quickly.
To foreshadow a related post which should show upward in the side by side couple of days, if you use the technique I mentioned above in regards to archiving my tweets (i.e. copying and pasting 'column D' from the spreadsheet), you can really save a whole conference without worrying about Storify or anything that has replaced it.
